Limited Edition Print – Bobby Dowler, Etching, 2014

London-based British painter Bobby Dowler immerses himself in the realm of abstraction, continually pushing the boundaries with found materials. Through cutting, collaging, and applying expressive, thick brush strokes, Dowler introduces an element of chance, resulting in unpredictable and captivating paintings. His artistic journey has led him to exhibit at renowned venues such as Hannah Barry Gallery in London, St. Moritz Art Masters in St. Moritz, MiddleMarch in Brussels, FoodFace in London, and House of Culture in Smartmo, Šlovenia. Dowler’s work channels the spirit of graffiti and street art, subverting the notion of controlled and deliberate results.

Dowler's “Etching” follows a logic of unpredictability: part planned, part automated writing, following the tradition of surrealists such as André Breton and his Manifestoes of Surrealism. Working with print for the first time, Dowler stated, “I felt compelled to freely draw of my own accord filling up the space of the plate with whatever came into my mind at that moment.” 

The marks Dolwer creates are swept together to produce images with freeform energy that move beyond the restrictions of the paper form. The result is a work reminiscent of graffiti and street painting, with an emphasis on subversion of controlled and mapped-out results. Through this practice, the artist introduces chance and unpredictability to the final work. Informed by his impressions of the Villa Lena environment, Bobby’s etching presents an artist’s landscape of the mind.
